How to choose your plants?
Choosing the plants to grow with your Growell can be an exciting process, yet might be a little confusing at the same time. What are the most important aspects to keep in mind to make sure your next plants thrive?
1. Household temperatures
Just like in nature, plants do need the right climatic conditions to grow. Some of our plants are more heat-sensitive than others but none of our plants like when the temperatures drop under
18 °C / 64 °F!
Heat sensitive plants (18 - 24 °C / 64 - 75 °F):
Herbs and greens: Arugula, Bloody Sorrel, Garden Cress, Green Kale, Green Lettuce, Green Sorrel, Italian Kale, Leaf Mustard, Leaf Radish, Oakleaf Lettuce, Pak Choi, Red Frill Mustard, Red Kale, Red Lettuce, Red Pak Choi, Red Romaine Lettuce, Romaine Lettuce, Wasabi Mustard, Mizuna, Red Oakleaf Lettuce.
Decorative plants: Busy Lizzy, Cornflower, Moss Rose, Ornamental Grass, Sweet Alyssum.
Fruiting plants: Dwarf Pea.
Less heat-sensitive plants (18 - 26 °C / 64 - 79 °F):
Herbs and greens: Chives, Leaf Celery, Lovage.
Decorative plants: Black Pansy, Red Pansy, Dusty Miller.
Fruiting plants: Wild Strawberry.
Heat tolerant plants (18 - 30 °C / 64 - 86 °F):
Herbs and greens: Lemon Balm, Curly Parsley, Thyme, Dwarf Basil, Peppermint, Red Basil, Hyssop, Catnip, Basil, Oregano, Thai Basil, Marjoram, Coriander/ Cilantro, Dill, Rosemary, Red Chard, Green Chard, Holy Basil, Plain Parsley, Garden Sage, Cinnamon Basil, Mibuna, Mountain Savory, Lemon Basil, Apple Mint, Shungiku, Rainbow Chard, Marseille Basil, Lime Basil.
Decorative plants: Lavender, Petunia, Painted Nettle, Polka Dot Plant, Cockscomb, White Snapdragon, Blue Petunia, Pink Petunia, Lace Fern, Calendula, Gazania.
Plants that love the heat and hate the cold (20 - 35 °C / 68 - 95 °F):
Fruiting plants: Purple Chili, Mini Tomato, Red Hot Chili Pepper, Yellow Sweet Pepper, Yellow Mini Tomato, Chili Pepper, Yellow Chili, Red Sweet Pepper, Piri Piri.
2. The purpose of your garden
What is the purpose of your garden? Do you wish to decorate your living space with beautiful flowers and other decorative plants or would you rather grow food?
If you lean more towards growing edibles, you can choose whether you wish to grow salad greens, fruiting plants, or herbs.
You don't have to commit to only one purpose though! You can always grow edible flowers together with other edibles!
3. Your experience level
Even though growing plants with Growell requires minimum effort, some plants are a bit more difficult to grow than others. As the saying goes - with time also comes the experience, so we recommend you to begin with plants that require minimum effort and work your way up to fruiting plants :)
4. How much patience do you have?
Even though sprouting time varies even in between the same species, some species take more time sprouting than others. We are not able to guarantee you an exact sprouting time, however, the following plants usually take longer than others:
Lace Fern, Piri Piri, Yellow Chili, Chili Pepper, Yellow Sweet Pepper, Red Hot Chili Pepper, Rosemary, Purple Chili, Peppermint, Ornamental Grass.
If you wish to have quick results, try the following plants:
Garden Cress, Leaf Radish.
